Halladay’s Ltd
Engineering Design Consultancy
A little history …..
With
four
decades
developing
downhole
equipment
and
systems
Nigel
Halladay
is
in
a
unique
position
of
being
able
to
use
this
collective
experience
and
knowledge
for
the
purposes
of
researching,
developing,
manufacturing and supplying downhole & related hardware.
Graduating
from
the
Camborne
School
of
Mines
and
joining
the
early
stages
of
the
CSM
Hot
Dry
rock
[HDR]
Geothermal
Project
known
as
“Hot
Rocks”
granted
an
opportunity
to
learn
about
a
wide
field
of
activity
associated
with
the
drilling,
stimulation
(explosive
&
hydraulic),
logging
&
circulation
of
a
100
°C,
3km
deep
fluid
reservoir.
The
development
of
downhole
instrumentation
was
the
principle
responsibility
and
included
a
wide
and
varied
range
of
devices
mostly
aimed
at
150
°C
operation, see projects.
After
Hot
Rocks
came
a
decade
of
commercially
based
operations
that
grew
from
the
HDR
project
taking
the
engineering
technology
to
new
extremes
of
350°C.
The
senior
mechanical
design
engineer
&
Engineering
Manager
were
the
key
roles
undertaken
during
this
period.
R&D
skills
were
enhanced
by
the
completion
of
a
Master’s
Degree
in high temperature seismic receiver design.
The
next
decade
and
beyond
saw
the
creation
of
Calidus
Engineering,
a
company
specialising
in
the
R&D,
design
and
manufacture
of
hostile
environment
tools
taking
“blue
sky”
ideas
through
to
finished
products.
As
founder,
Managing
Director
and
ultimate
mechanical
design
guru,
Nigel
took
the
company
from
start-up
to
35
people
in
a
purpose
built
facility, selling on to a Norwegian group in 2012.
Halladay’s
Ltd
was
founded
in
2005
as
a
manufacturing
resource,
transferring
the
business
to
Calidus
in
2007.
Since
2012
Halladay’s
is
the
vehicle
through
which
today’s
consulting
activities
take
place
but
the
name
is
not
new.
The
original
company
was
founded
by
W.
E.
Halladay
in
1917
(great
grand
father)
as
a
drop
forge
works in Birmingham, sadly closing its doors in 2003.
SPECIALIST R&D AND DESIGN SERVICES FOR DOWNHOLE OIL & GAS
AND GEOTHERMAL INSTRUMENTATION
40
years
of
experience
are
difficult
to
sum
up
in
a
concise
way
that
provides
a
menu
from
which
to
select
potential
solutions
to
problems
however
comparing
this
section
with
the
PROJECTS
will
give
you
an
insight
into
what
we
can
offer.
Mechanical
and
hydraulic
engineering
are
our
core
skills
but
when
required
additional
skills
(electronics/software)
can
be accessed via external resources.
RESEARCH
&
DEVELOPMENT
-
R&D
is
an
essential
skill
enabling
a
focussed
and
considered
approach
to
problem
solving
providing
a
cost
efficient
route
to
a
solution
which
is
considered to be an essential skill for meeting client needs.
DESIGN
FOR
MANUFACTURE
-
Having
owned
and
operated
a
manufacturing
facility
we
have
a
very
strong
awareness
of
manufacturing
and
process
costs
so
ensure
where
possible
designs take this into account.
DESIGN
-
“FIT
FOR
PURPOSE”
-
With
a
career
in
building
“one-off”
or
prototype
tools
and
often
being
the
end
user,
field
experience
has
taught
us
what
works
and
what
doesn’t.
As
with manufacture, being fit for purpose helps to ensure reliability and user satisfaction.
MECHANICAL
DESIGN
-
Our
primary
design
tool
is
SolidWorks
Premium
with
Simulation
(2018
&
2019).
In
the
downhole
environment
it
is
difficult
to
separate
out
disciplines
as
they
are
strongly
interdependent
and
there
is
no
substitute
for
knowledge
combined
with
experience.
STATICS -
basic stress analysis supported by FEA
DYNAMICS -
extensive
knowledge
of
seismic
receiver
related
applications
(inc’
MPhil research degree) inc’ FEA
SEALS -
unique
knowledge
of
short
term
&
permanent
deployments
at
200
°C to 450°C using multiple seal technologies
MATERIALS -
broad
applications
knowledge
including
cost,
manufacture,
strength, stiffness, corrosion, galling
HYDRAULICS -
quasi-static
systems
for
clamping
and
actuation
at
up
to
200
°C
including pumps, control & relief valves, filters etc
OPTICS/FIBRE-OPTICS -
packaging
of
fibres,
custom
connectors,
field
joints,
feedthru’s
&
terminations
HEAT
SHIELDS
-
detailed
knowledge
of
the
manufacturing
methods
for
+400
°C
and
application design of custom heat shields (dewars).
TEST RIGS - Custom equipment and systems to enable pressure, oven and stress tests.
DEPLOYMENT
SYSTEMS
-
Surface
hardware
to
facilitate
transport,
assembly,
test,
rig-up
and deployment of single tools through to multi-level (+100) arrays.
